DIY Shutters

DIY shutters can be made with inexpensive material. The DIY shutter will come in different shapes and sizes, but the idea is the same.

Measure out enough area for all your boards such that you add an inch (2cm) on both top and bottom cut-lines to account for the width of the pine board & saw kerf, and at least 3 inches (8cm) space on each side to allow for paint coverage between boards. Cut each wood board to length by running it through a table or circular saw and use a straight edge (ruler) to make sure they are all exactly the same length according to the measurement marks made beforehand.

Shutters are often easier than other types of window treatments to install on your own. With other window treatments such as curtains or shades, the installation bolts can be hard to reach once you get your head in there because of the molding that gets in the way or because they’re inside a frame that has been painted shut. Shutters, on the other hand, hang from an opening at their top edge and usually have self-holding screws at their bottom corners. So they’re easily installed by anyone.

Shutters are made from lightweight, rot-resistant wood like cedar. Cedar is produced in both naturally occurring and managed forests of North America, Northwestern US and Canada. Cedar is so ubiquitous because even though it decays easily when untreated or exposed to water, its decay can be controlled with paint, linseed oil or wood sealants. It’s also easy to handle while still green which makes it suitable for DIY shutter projects.

There are many good materials to consider for shutters. You’ll want something that’s reflective, durable, and affordable. The following is a list of the best shutter materials ranked by their price point (the highest price first):
– Aluminum (expensive)
– Steel (high cost)
– PVC (middle of the road cost)
– Fiberglass or vinyl shutters with wood frame (the lowest cost).

Both types of door/window coverings have benefits and drawbacks. On the other hand, wood shutters are often more attractive and their natural surfaces provide a better fit for most homes; but they can be expensive and inflexible in case you might want to change something later (such as moving it from an open position at night). Another drawback is that some polymer blends can deteriorate if exposed to UV light over extended periods of time, leading them to become brittle or show surface cracks when gently flexed – so choose wisely when picking your shutter material!
